Do you live abroad?
The basic advice if you do not reside within England or Wales is to contact the local Superintendent Registrar of the District where you would like to have your ceremony as soon as you and your partner have made a decision to marry in the county. Arrangements are easily made but there may be a number of documents which need to be produced for inspection prior to giving formal notice of marriage and some of these documents may require verification or in some cases translation.
Details about the documents which may need to be produced are referred to under Giving Notice. You and your partner must reside within England or Wales for a period before the notice may be given so it is always best to contact the staff at the local Register Office as early as possible.
Getting married abroad
Couples who choose to marry abroad may need to obtain a Certificate of No Impediment. This document may be requested by representatives in other countries and could ease the process of organising a ceremony in another country. However marriage laws vary in different countries and it would be sensible to contact your local Superintendent Registrar as soon as you have made your decision.
