Platinum is a relatively new metal for jewellery - a process to make it workable for jewellery was discovered in the 18th century, but it was normally used as an alloy for gold. Today platinum is considered more valuable than gold.

 Precious stones. The carat for precious stones is not the same as the carat for precious metals. It is not a proportion of pure metal - it is a unit of weight equal to 200milligrams. The measure is very easy to understand - the higher the carats the bigger the stone.
